Why Get an AWD MINI? 
AWD vehicles differ from 4WD vehicles in that the all-wheel drive system is always on. These two drivetrains operate differently, though people often refer to them as if they are the same.

How The MINI ALL4 System Works: 
The ALL4 AWD system defaults to AWD from the get-go. Similar to BMW's Xdrive system, which defaults to a 70/30 split of the engine's power from rear to front and also has the ability to able to divert 100% of power to the rear wheels, MINI's ALL4 system starts with a 50/50 split of the engine's power with the ability to re-allocate up to 100% of power back to the front wheels.

If the technical explanation is hard to understand, all you need to do is test drive a MINI ALL4 vehicle to feel the control and stability you'll get driving a MINI in wintery conditions around Portland.

Are ALL4 AWD Cars Better in Snow and Rain?
All-wheel drive is better than two-wheel drive when it comes to driving in the snow and rain, particularly when trying to go up slippery hills around Portland. But it's important to remember that AWD cannot prevent an accident if you're driving too fast on slick roads. People often overestimate capabilities of their all-wheel-drive vehicles, so you'll still want to drive cautiously when the road conditions are bad.
